i LOVE running a business. i have enjoyed building something from nothing and i especially enjoy providing our clients with stellar service and making them feel like gold. i am always thinking about ways to improve our client experience, contests to hold, people to network with, pictures we want to make...
but, frankly, what i suck at is selling. you will find no inkling of a used car salesman in me. when i was a kid, i could talk anyone into anything, but as an adult, i have become much more introverted. i don't think that is a bad thing necessarily, however, the ultimate goal of running a business, as enjoyable as it is to do something you love, is to make money.
as we think about ways to expand our business and create what we see as an unfulfilled niche in the st. louis market, high-end pet photography, we are analyzing all parts of benton park photo co. passive marketing is easy. post to the blog every so often, try to be active on facebook, blahblahblah. we want to go viral, not like STD viral. did she just write that?
so, in an effort to step out of our comfortable little, introverted, passive marketing box, we'll be at bark in the park saturday to meet as many pets and their people as we can. our goal is to network with at least 50 people and photograph their pets. if you find and approach us and say, "i love my furry friends," we'll hand you a little raffle ticket for a top-secret raffle. and we'll be super stoked.
recent photo of us to be posted soon.

have you ever stopped and thought: how did i get here, to this point in my life, doing these things with these people? i've been doing that for some years now, and doing it more often as i near my mid-30s, fatherhood and so on. however, with our new pet photography venture at benton park photo co., i easily can explain the why, if not the how.
in the past few years, i've had the fortune of falling into what has to be one of the sweetest gigs for a writer and photographer who also is a doggy-daddy. i work at purina. writing, writing, writing and photographing, photographing, photographing for magazines the company publishes, among other things, such as these magazine ads i shot a couple of years ago for Purina Pro Plan.

i travel the country meeting dog lovers and their dogs, and photographing them. i also get to talk with a lot of dog and cat rescue people from coast to coast. people with hearts of gold and a remarkable amount of steel in their spines to work through the heartrending moments of pet rescue and adoption to tell unbelievable tales of triumph they made come true.
all said, pet photography may not be what i may have guessed 10 years ago i'd be doing today, at purina or with becca at benton park photo. but a progression of events has led me here and i'm ecstatic that it has.
in 2004, i met my future wife and her, now our, adopted chocolate labrador retriever, jessie. in 2008, we adopted max, a big, goofy black lab.
now in 2010, we're putting our love of pets and photography into one bundle of booyah. we can't wait to share it with local area rescue organizations for the benefit of rescued pets in need of forever homes. and we are inspired and juiced up to put these passions on the table for clients who share our sense of artistic appreciation for furry ears, wet noses and muddy paws.
this saturday, may 15, we'll be at bark in the park, the charity walk and fair to support the humane society of missouri. we'll be meeting and greeting and, of course, photographing. registration closes for the event friday at noon.
there's more news to come, more opportunities for everyone and whole bunches of photography. we're still doing portraits, weddings and all that other awesome stuff, too. so if anyone is planning a wedding in 2011 with babies and dogs and cats and kids strutting down the aisle with the wedding party, let us know. we'll roll that ball of fun all into one with you.
don't forget: we're doing dog portraits at the one lucky mutt charity bbq to benefit stray rescue of st. louis, june 12. we're hosting "pooches 'n' smooches," a pet photography launch "party," at forest park, june 26.
and stay tuned for a new pet photography-only blog, coming soon!!

we are officially debuting our st. louis pet photography services with two fabulous events.
first, we'll be at one lucky mutt in wildwood on saturday, june 12, time TBD, for their charity bbq to benefit stray rescue. we'll be doing quickie pet portraits for donations only. the minimum donation will probably be around 10 buckaroos. we'll then set up an online gallery and you'll be able to order prints or single digital files if you choose to do so.
second, we'll be at forest park on saturday, june 26, 8-11 a.m. for our pooches 'n' smooches 30 minute sessions. $50 session fee (plus tax) including one high resolution digital file to be delivered by email. additional downloads available for $15/file (plus tax) as well as our usual print offerings. your pooch must be well-behaved off leash (for this session). if yours is/are not so well-behaved off leash like our willful labs, we're happy to come to your home or meet you at the fenced location of your choice for a regular pet session at a later date, though this super special pricing would not apply. the emphasis here will be on dogs, not people, though we will, of course, get at least a couple frames of you and your dog together. slots are limited, so book soon by shooting an email to pets@bentonparkphotoco.com.
